On 24 May 2000 in Lausanne, the General Meeting of the Swiss Insurance Association (SIA) elected Dr. Hansjörg Frei, a member of the Swiss Central Management of the Winterthur Insurance Company as its new President. He then succeeded Professor Riccardo Jagmetti. Dr. Hansjörg Frei has, since 1997, been Vice-President of the SIA. From 1991 to 1997 he headed the Swiss Union of Private Health and Accident Insurers.

Lausanne, 24 May 2000 – As Dr. Hansjörg Frei remarked in his acceptance speech, the 5-year presidency of Professor Jagmetti will undoubtedly go down in the annals of the 100-year old Association. The former ETH Law professor and Speaker of the Upper House of Parliament has left a deep imprint on the fundamental reform of the Association structures which, in early 1998 led to a consolidation of the then 7 insurance organisations and to a realignment of the Association’s activities. The 12 Board members were confirmed in office. The new Chairman of the SIA Life Insurance Committee will be Roland Chlapowski who heads the Swiss Division of the Rentenanstalt/Swiss Life.

The SIA is the representative umbrella association of the Swiss private insurance industry and it represents the interests of the insurance industry in Parliament and in dealings with the authorities. It also assumes tasks in the general interest of its members such as conducting active public relations work. The General Meeting recalled that this year was the centenary of the SIA which was founded on 14 December 1900.
