St Gallen, 23 June 2009 – The SIA held its 79th Annual General Assembly in St Gallen today. With re-elections on the agenda, the SIA delegates re-elected their President, Erich Walser, and eleven members of the Board, to which they also elected three new members: Thomas Buberl, of Zurich Switzerland, Philippe Hebeisen of the Vaudoise, and Olav Noack of the Bâloise. They replace Rolf Mehr, of the Vaudoise, who has reached retirement age, Markus Hongler, of Zurich, and Martin Strobel, of the Bâloise, who are taking on new roles within their companies. Yvo Furrer of Swiss Life was also elected as the new President of the Life Committee.
In his presidential speech, Erich Walser described the Swiss insurance industry as having coped well with the financial crisis so far. Although the trial of its strength was not yet over, he could see, from the way the crisis had progressed so far, that the industry was in good shape. The insurance market in Switzerland functioned extremely well - without government aid, government intervention or additional regulation. Anybody looking for insurance coverage would find a solution on the market that met their needs. Claims payments were being made at all times without any liquidity problems. Insurance products were secure, providing the guaranteed benefits without any ifs and buts: «The Swiss insurance industry has thus demonstrated an encouraging robustness, which is largely attributable to the crisis-resistant nature of the insurance business model.»
Guest speakers were Dr. Konrad Hummler, managing partner of private bankers Wegelin & Co., who spoke on «What are we learning from the crisis?» and Daniel Siegenthaler, Leader of the Patrouille Suisse, who spoke on «Teamwork on speed up to 1000».
