The multiple pile-ups on the A1 near Niederbipp at the beginning of November 2003 caused losses in the two-digit millions. Bodily injury claims are estimated to be at least CHF 10 million, whilst property damage has been put at more than CHF 1 million. The extent and complexity of the events prompted insurers to develop joint solutions to deal with claims settlement.
Zurich, 30 March 2004 – The aims was to ensure swift claims settlement and spare both those that suffered a loss and the insurers a protracted process of investigation and liability disputes. Seventy vehicles were involved in the pile-ups in thick fog, which injured more than 50 and claimed one life.
Liability insurers have worked together with social insurers to find pragmatic solutions to deal with bodily injury claims, which are expected to surpass the CHF 10 million mark. Injured drivers and passengers can report their claims directly to the liability insurer covering the vehicle in which they were travelling. Insurers will determine jointly which share of the amounts paid out in compensation will be borne by the social insurers and liability insurers involved.
As reported at the beginning of December 2003, property damage totalled more than CHF 1 million. The damage caused to vehicles with fully comprehensive insurance policies was indemnified by the insurers providing coverage. Damage to the remaining vehicles was indemnified, as an exception, direct by the owners' own liability insurers. In return, the insurers waived any rights to subrogation.
