Fair claim settlement

The private Swiss insurance companies regretted learning of the devastating avalanches that have hit the entire Alpine region of recent weeks. They were especially distressed that this has cost people their lives. They thank all those who offered their assistance for the speedy, efficient and committed way they carried out rescue and damage-containment operations.

Zurich, 3.3.99 – Private insurance companies have so far received claims for CHF 55 million worth of building damage and CHF 25 million to contents from the most heavily affected cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Valais and Liechtenstein. In addition, there is damage to motor vehicles and loss suffered as a result of interruption of business activities. Over one-third of the total damage was reported in the Canton of Valais alone. Dr. Max Gretener, Business Manager of the Swiss Natural Disaster Pool, estimates that the cost of the avalanche damage to private insurers will top the CHF 100 million mark.

The insured parties concerned are guaranteed a generous and fair settlement.
